Youkali - Kurt Weill (a Tango Habanera) | Amsterdam Sinfonietta

Kurt Weill originally wrote Youkali in 1934 as an instrumental tango-habanera for Marie Galante, a Parisian stage work created while he was living in exile after fleeing Nazi Germany. The production itself was not a major success, but this haunting melody outlived it. Later, French writer Roger Fernay added lyrics, transforming Youkali into a song about an imaginary island of happiness, love and freedom — a dream place that, in the end, remains unreachable. Its bittersweet longing has made it one of Weill’s most enduring songs.
