Day 4 of our 5-day road trip across western Japan with my mom! 🇯🇵🚗 It rained all night at the campsite, so we cooked a leftover breakfast, packed up camp in the wind, and changed our plans. Instead of hiking, we visited the Sanbe Azukihara Buried Forest Park in Shimane, where a forest buried by a volcanic eruption about 4,000 years ago still stands underground — they call it "nature's canned goods." At the gift shop, I found straps made from 4,000-year-old cedar 😳 Then we soaked our feet in an iron-rich hot spring that turns brown in the air, and had Sanbe soba with anago (conger eel) tempura and a whole root of fresh wasabi… which was WAY spicier than I expected 😂 After driving west along the Sea of Japan, we stayed at a dorm-style inn in Tottori, cooked dinner with our camping leftovers, and took a night walk around Tottori Station. Have you ever tried fresh wasabi? Let me know in the comments! 00:00 A rainy morning at our campsite 00:46 Camp breakfast: leftover fried rice 02:58 Packing up camp in the wind 03:44 Change of plans: a buried forest 04:04 Sanbe Azukihara Buried Forest Park 07:01 Gift shop: a 4,000-year-old cedar strap 07:46 Rice drying in the countryside 08:08 Iron-rich hot spring & free footbath 09:03 Lunch: Sanbe soba, anago tempura & fresh wasabi 10:39 Driving west to Tottori & the Sea of Japan 11:51 Our dorm-style stay in Tottori 12:43 Leftover dinner in the shared kitchen 13:55 Night walk around Tottori Station 14:20 Finally, a real bed This is Day 4 of our 5-day road trip.
