This lesson explains how early years practitioners can use children’s interests to plan meaningful learning experiences. You will learn how careful observation and active listening reveal repeated choices, favourite topics and recurring play themes. The lesson also clarifies that child-led planning does not mean children control everything: adults remain responsible for planning, while children’s interests guide the direction. It demonstrates how one interest, such as dinosaurs, can support literacy, mathematics, imaginative play, communication and vocabulary development. Practitioners can extend learning by introducing useful resources, new concepts and well-timed open-ended questions, while joining play without taking over. The lesson stresses that interest-led planning should remain balanced, inclusive and accessible, with new experiences offered alongside familiar activities. By starting where each child is and building from there, practitioners can encourage engagement, motivation, confidence and stronger communication.
