It rains all week. This is not a problem. It is the point. Rain keeps the yard empty, keeps the officers indoors, and covers noise. At about six, the film starts. At about seven, the bar gives. Between the broken window and the outer wall there is a short run across open ground that has been lit at night for a hundred years. The wall is twenty feet of Victorian brick with a rounded stone coping, designed by people who thought about this problem carefully. The ladder comes over at the agreed minute. Pike is forty-four and has not climbed anything in five years, and the ladder is swinging, and he is most of the way up when it turns under him.
