🎞 SESSION No. 009 — THE LADDER OVER THE WALL While the hall watches the Saturday film, a man goes out through a broken window and up a Victorian wall on a rope ladder rigged with knitting needles. ────────────────────────────── London, October 1966. Wormwood Scrubs, D Hall. Pike is five years into forty-two. Nobody in the English system had been given forty-two years before. The number was arithmetic, or so it was said: three years for each agent the court believed he had handed over. He does not talk about it. He teaches Arabic to other prisoners. He is polite to the officers. By every account in his file he is a model inmate. On Saturday evenings the hall watches a film. Attendance is close to total, because the alternative is a cell. For about ninety minutes the landings are empty and the officers are at the back of the room, near the projector. Outside, in a car parked facing away from the wall, Keane waits with a radio. The radio came in months ago, in pieces, and it is the only reason any of this is possible. Without it there is no way to agree on a minute. With it there is a voice in a rolled sock under a blanket saying the road is clear, or saying wait. The rest is improvised out of what a prison contains, and what a hardware shop sells. A cast-iron bar in a corridor window, worked at over weeks until it will move. A rope ladder made outside from clothesline, with rungs cut from size thirteen knitting needles, because they are steel, they are cheap, and nobody looks twice at a man buying knitting needles. It rains all week. This is not a problem. It is the point. Rain keeps the yard empty, keeps the officers indoors, and covers noise. At about six, the film starts. At about seven, the bar gives. Between the broken window and the outer wall there is a short run across open ground that has been lit at night for a hundred years. The wall is twenty feet of Victorian brick with a rounded stone coping, designed by people who thought about this problem carefully. The ladder comes over at the agreed minute. Pike is forty-four and has not climbed anything in five years, and the ladder is swinging, and he is most of the way up when it turns under him. He lands badly on the far side, on wet tarmac, and something in his wrist goes. Four streets away there is a bedsit with the curtains already drawn. By midnight there are roadblocks on every arterial road out of London, and his photograph is going to press. This is the sound of ninety minutes on a Saturday, and of the nine weeks after it. ────────────────────────────── ⏱ CHAPTERS 00:00 The Wall on Du Cane Road 03:05 Forty-Two Years 06:19 D Hall on a Saturday 09:33 The Film Starts at Six 12:52 A Radio in a Sock 16:05 Two Knitting Needles 19:19 The Bar at the End 22:29 Rain All Week 25:42 He Counts the Windows 28:54 A Humber Parked Facing Out 31:56 A Pane of Frosted Glass 35:11 Nobody Watches the Corridor 38:27 Voices on a Weak Signal 41:40 The Yard After Lights Out 45:06 The Window Frame Gives 48:19 Twenty Feet of Brick 51:14 A Rope Ladder Comes Over 54:14 The Drop to the Road 57:20 The Car Pulls Away 1:00:35 A Bedsit Four Streets Away 1:04:14 Roadblocks by Midnight 1:07:31 His Photograph in Every Paper 1:11:03 Plaster Dust and Iodine 1:14:21 The Curtains Stay Shut 1:17:45 A Camper Van in December 1:21:01 A Compartment Behind the Panel 1:24:31 The Ferry at Dover 1:27:57 The Wall in Winter Light ────────────────────────────── 🎧 Best with headphones.
