🌼 THE HISTORY AND TRADITION OF GARBA
Garba is a traditional folk dance rooted in Gujarat, western India, with a deep connection to the worship of the Mother Goddess. Passed down through generations, it has grown from gatherings in homes and temple courtyards into large community celebrations that welcome dancers of different ages and backgrounds.
Traditionally, dancers move in a circle around an image of Maa Amba or an earthen pot containing a lighted oil lamp, often called a Garbha Deep. Singing, rhythmic clapping, and coordinated steps bring the community together in devotion and celebration.
In 2023, UNESCO inscribed “Garba of Gujarat” on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognising this living cultural tradition.
📍 WHERE IS GARBA CELEBRATED?
Gujarat is Garba’s cultural home, with celebrations across Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Kutch, and many other towns and villages. Gujarati communities have also carried Garba to other parts of India and around the world, making Garba nights a much-loved part of Navratri celebrations beyond Gujarat.
🪔 WHY IS GARBA IMPORTANT DURING NAVRATRI?
Navratri means “nine nights.” During Sharad Navratri, the autumn festival, devotees honour Maa Durga, Maa Amba, and the divine feminine energy known as Shakti.
Garba expresses this devotion through music and movement. The shared dance circle brings people together, connecting faith, cultural identity, and community celebration. Festive clothing, glowing diyas, decorated shrines, and devotional gatherings create the atmosphere associated with these special nights.
🥁 DANDIYA RAAS AND NAVRATRI DANCE NIGHTS
Dandiya Raas is another Gujarati dance tradition closely associated with Navratri celebrations. While Garba commonly features rhythmic clapping and circular steps, Dandiya uses sticks tapped in coordinated patterns with other dancers.
Garba and Dandiya Raas often feature in the same Navratri programme, bringing different dance styles to a shared festive evening. Add Aaja Gori to your Dandiya night playlist, Garba dance practice, or Navratri group performance.
“आजा गोरी” के साथ मनाइए नवरात्रि का उत्सव! गरबा और डांडिया की रात में अपने परिवार और दोस्तों के साथ झूमिए, और माँ दुर्गा के पर्व की खुशियाँ बाँटिए।
