Syzokryli Ukrainian Dance Ensemble — 8 Couples Traditional Dance at Toronto Ukrainian Festival 2026 Witness a spectacular performance by the Syzokryli Ukrainian Dance Ensemble from New York City, featuring eight couples performing their second traditional dance at the 2026 Toronto Ukrainian Festival on Bloor West Village. This video captures the ensemble’s signature blend of Ukrainian folk tradition, classical ballet technique, and contemporary stagecraft. About the Syzokryli Ukrainian Dance Ensemble Founded in 1978 by the legendary prima ballerina and choreographer Roma Pryma-Bohachevsky, the Syzokryli Ukrainian Dance Ensemble is based in New York City and stands as one of the most innovative Ukrainian dance companies in North America. The ensemble's name, Syzokryli, is a poetic Ukrainian adjective meaning “shimmering-winged,” frequently used to describe an eagle—evoking grace, power, and soaring beauty. Roma Pryma-Bohachevsky was a true pioneer of Ukrainian dance. A trained ballet dancer who studied at the Vienna Academy of Music and Performing Arts, she brought a level of technical precision and artistic depth to Ukrainian folk dance that was previously unseen. Her choreographic works for Syzokryli—including “Battle for Freedom,” “Icon,” and the emotionally devastating “Fight for Ukraine”—are celebrated for weaving Ukrainian themes with ballet, modern, and stylized folk dance elements. Why Syzokryli Stands Apart What makes Syzokryli truly unique is its female-driven artistry. Unlike traditional Ukrainian national dance ensembles where male dancers often dominate the stage with acrobatic leaps, Syzokryli is composed primarily of women and girls who perform with “intricate footwork and military precision”. They are powerful, athletic, and unapologetically commanding in their movement. As one dancer explained, “People think women are weak, dainty, and delicate, but [Pryma-Bohachevsky] wanted to show what they really are. Powerful, graceful, and a force to be reckoned with”. The ensemble's commitment to intergenerational cultural transmission is equally remarkable. Since Pryma-Bohachevsky’s passing in 2004, her daughter Ania Bohachevsky Lonkevych has served as artistic director, and her granddaughter Roma now dances and choreographs for the group—wearing her grandmother's hundred-year-old embroidered sleeves from the Poltava region. This living legacy ensures that Ukrainian dance culture is not merely preserved but actively evolving. The Performance This video features Syzokryli‘s second dance of their Toronto set, performed by eight couples in traditional Ukrainian folk costumes—white vyshyvanka shirts with red embroidery, wide red trousers for the men, and flowing red skirts with embroidered aprons for the women. The red leather boots that define Ukrainian folk dance are on full display as the dancers leap, spin, and stamp in perfect unison. The choreography showcases the ensemble’s signature fusion: the athleticism of Ukrainian folk dance, the precision of classical ballet, and the emotional depth of modern movement. About the Toronto Ukrainian Festival The Toronto Ukrainian Festival is North America's largest Ukrainian street festival, held annually along Bloor Street West between Jane Street and Kennedy Park Road. The 2026 edition marks the festival’s 30th anniversary, featuring non-stop entertainment across multiple stages, traditional Ukrainian cuisine, craft vendors, and cultural demonstrations. The festival transforms the Bloor West Village neighbourhood into a celebration of Ukrainian heritage and Canadian multiculturalism.
