Part 8: The Power Of God's Kingdom

What is the biggest challenge facing a leader in God’s kingdom? And where does the joy of serving come from? On Celebration of Ministry Sunday at CrossLife Church, we celebrate and pray for the leaders God has called to serve in our church and school—including board members, ministry leaders, volunteers, LifeGroup leaders, CrossKiDS and school teachers, staff, and everyone serving in God’s kingdom. In this message, Pastor Daron looks at the prophet Elijah in 1 Kings 17–19 and discovers that Elijah’s greatest challenge was not a foreign army, a corrupt government, difficult coworkers, drought, economic hardship, or ministry problems. His greatest challenge was closer to home: his own sinful heart and the temptation to trust his interpretation of circumstances more than the power and promises of God. When Elijah became overwhelmed and discouraged, he hid in a cave and essentially told God, “I can’t do this.” God responded with a question: “What are you doing here, Elijah?” God did not abandon his servant. Instead, he confronted Elijah’s fears and false assumptions with truth, forgiveness, mercy, and grace. That same challenge confronts Christian leaders today. When ministry becomes difficult, people disappoint us, circumstances overwhelm us, or we feel unliked or exhausted, our first instinct can be to look everywhere except within ourselves. But God calls his leaders to humble repentance, receive his forgiveness, and reconnect with the true source of our strength: Jesus. Jesus is the perfect King and servant. He “did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mark 10:45). Through his death on the cross, Jesus paid the ransom for sinners who do not deserve his loving leadership. And he calls us to serve in his kingdom—not for our glory, but for his. *Jesus over church. Jesus over school. Jesus over our leaders. Jesus over me.* That is the power of God's kingdom. When Jesus is greater than our fears, guilt, problems, disappointments, preferences, and limitations, those things cannot steal the joy that Jesus gives. Christian leaders can serve with an *unstoppable, defiant joy that comes from Jesus and always expects God to show up.* In this sermon, you'll discover: Why Elijah’s greatest leadership challenge was not the circumstances around him, but the sin within him. How spiritual leaders can recognize when they are serving God versus serving their own preferences. Why difficult people, ministry problems, and personal hardships cannot separate us from God’s love or calling. How God responds to discouraged leaders with truth, forgiveness, mercy, and grace. What 2 Timothy 1:7–9 teaches about fear, power, love, self-discipline, suffering, calling, and grace. Why Christian ministry is ultimately about Jesus—not our church, school, position, name, or accomplishments. How “Jesus over me” leads to joy in me. Why leaders can expect God to work even when we cannot see how he will provide. How Elijah’s experience with the ravens reminds us that God controls what we cannot control.
