The A487 is one of Wales's most important north-south roads, running the entire length of the country along the west coast for 174 miles/280km from Haverfordwest/Hwlffordd in south Wales to the city of Bangor in north Wales. It connects to St Davids/Tyddewi, the UK's smallest city in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park, and Aberystwyth, the university town in mid-Wales. The A487 Caernarfon and Bontnewydd Bypass opened to traffic on 19 February 2022. It's entirely single carriageway, but with alternating overtaking lanes, it allows faster traffic to get past slower traffic at regular intervals. Running just to the north of Snowdonia/Eyryi, southbound traffic in particular gets some spectacular mountain views in clear conditions. This video shows a southbound journey along the A487 Caernarfon Bypass, from the roundabout with the A4086 just east of Caernarfon, to the roundabout with the A4871 between Bontnewydd and Caernarfon. Filming date: May 2025.
