Zero. That's how many electric Minis are currently built in Britain. The most recognisably British car on Earth — the one from the Italian Job, the one that won Monte Carlo three times, the one with the Union flag on the roof — has an electric version that isn't made here at all. It's built in China, on a platform developed by Spotlight Automotive, a joint venture between BMW and Great Wall Motor.
And it was supposed to come home. In 2023, BMW announced over £600 million to build two new electric Minis — the Cooper and the Aceman — at Plant Oxford from 2026, with the site going all-electric by 2030. The government backed it with a reported £75 million. Around 4,000 jobs at Oxford and Swindon were declared secure. Photographs were taken, the Prime Minister called it a shining example of British manufacturing. Then BMW paused it, citing "multiple uncertainties facing the automotive industry" — and agreed not to take the government's cheque. Companies don't hand back tens of millions in free public money unless they've stopped intending to do the thing it was for.
This video covers the whole story: Cowley from the Bullnose Morris to the 1959 original, the five million-plus Minis built before production ended in 2000, BMW's £3 billion in British investment since — because this is not a story with a cartoon villain. Then the turn: electric Mini production starting at Oxford in 2019, moving to China in 2021, and staying there. Plus the five real reasons — the ZEV mandate, EU tariffs of up to 45% on Chinese-built EVs, softer electric demand, Britain's failure to build a battery supply chain, and the coldest one of all: the Chinese line already exists.
And what it means for you: how to check where any car was actually built (the VIN's first letter — S means Britain), what's quietly happening to the values of British-built petrol Minis from a plant that may never build that combination again, why parts and lead times matter more than pride on a car shipped 8,000 miles, and the exact corporate language — "reviewing the timeline" — that has preceded every plant closure in this country for thirty years. Luton. Swindon. And now Sunderland, building for a Chinese brand.
Did you ever own one? The original or the new one — tell us which in the comments. And the hard question: if it's designed in Germany, built on a platform developed with a Chinese partner, and assembled 8,000 miles from Oxford — does it still count as British?
