Sometimes you can just tell when someone isn’t really okay. Maybe they’re a little quieter than usual. Maybe their replies get shorter. Maybe they still laugh and make jokes, but something about it just feels different. And then you ask them how they’re doing. “I’m fine.” I think most of us know that answer. *“You Don’t Have to Say You’re Fine”* is about what I wish more people meant when they asked, “Are you okay?” Not “Tell me what’s wrong so I can fix it.” Not “Give me an explanation.” Just… *You don’t have to pretend with me.* Because sometimes you genuinely don’t know what’s wrong. There isn’t always one big thing you can point at. Sometimes you’re just exhausted. Everything feels heavier than it should, and trying to explain it feels harder than simply saying you’re fine. One of my favorite parts of this song is: *“You can tell me everything. Or nothing. Either way… You don’t have to be okay with me.”* I think that’s something people sometimes forget when trying to help. You don’t always need the perfect advice. You don’t need to force someone to open up before they’re ready. Sometimes just staying matters. Sit with them. Talk about something completely stupid. Let there be silence. And if they finally say “No, actually, I’m not okay,” don’t suddenly treat them like they’re a different person. The dragon imagery in this song is about that too. If somebody is struggling to fly through their own storm, you don’t have to grab their wings and decide where they need to go. You can just fly beside them. And if they can’t keep flying tonight? Land with them. Wait somewhere above the city and watch the morning come. There doesn’t have to be some huge breakthrough before sunrise. Sometimes getting through the night together is enough. And I think the ending says what I wanted this entire song to say: *“And if the answer is no… You can say no. I’m still here.”* If someone you care about hasn’t seemed like themselves lately, maybe check on them. And if they say they’re fine, you don’t have to interrogate them or force an answer. Just make sure they know you actually mean it when you say you’re there. And if *you’re* the person who keeps saying “I’m fine” because it feels easier than explaining everything… You’re allowed to give a different answer sometimes. “I’m tired.” “I don’t know.” “Not really.” Those count too. You don’t have to be okay with everyone. Hopefully there’s at least one person you don’t have to pretend around. 🐉🖤 Thank you for listening and continuing to support my music. It genuinely means a lot to me that these songs keep reaching people who see something of themselves in them. ☕ Support me on Ko-Fi: https://ko-fi.com/jdkzero
