Love Again (Mick's Music Bar)

“Love Again” is another song originally written by my friend Alan, from around the time our musical partnership was really beginning to take shape. We had started getting together, jamming, trading ideas, and gradually learning how to play off one another. Alan showed me this song, and he really liked the guitar interjections I began adding around it. Over time, those parts became part of the song itself, and it eventually became one of the staples of what we played together. The original version was recorded live at Mick's Music Bar in Benson, Omaha, Nebraska. There weren’t many people in the room that night, but when we played this one, everybody seemed to end up on the dance floor. I also remember feeling particularly possessed during the lead playing that night, and I think some of that energy came through in the recording. Alan and I had other songs that lived in somewhat rougher territory. “World of Music,” for example, looked more at the adventurous, occasionally darker and less glamorous side of playing live. This song is almost the opposite. It is infectiously light, romantic, playful, and full of affection for life and for the possibility of falling in love. There is also a personal connection for me. Around the period when we were playing this song, I was just beginning to meet the woman who would eventually become my wife. Because of that, the song has always carried an extra layer of meaning for me. This version tries to preserve the spirit of the original song and the interplay Alan and I developed around it: loose, acoustic, slightly eccentric, moving forward with a little bounce, and above all warm, hopeful, and in love with being alive.
