Singapore is smaller than New York City. It has no oil, no gas, no farmland, and it still buys part of its water from its neighbour. Yet today the average person there produces almost twice as much as the average person in Britain, the empire that once ruled it. We wanted to know why.
The obvious answer is "good leadership." That's part of it. But the real story starts with the map: a tiny island at the end of the Strait of Malacca, the narrowest door between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. Everything else, from water to land to factories to trust, Singapore had to build.
This is the story of Singapore, told through its money.
