Lake Nyos looked like an ordinary lake.
But beneath its calm surface, an enormous amount of carbon dioxide had been building up for years.
On August 21, 1986, something triggered a sudden release of that gas. A massive invisible cloud moved away from the lake and through nearby valleys, where it displaced breathable air.
At least 1,700 people died.
The event is sometimes described as an “exploding lake.” But the physics was very different.
In this documentary, we reconstruct what happened at Lake Nyos, explain how carbon dioxide became trapped beneath the water, why the gas suddenly escaped, how the cloud moved through the landscape, and why the exact trigger remains uncertain.
The lake did not explode.
It breathed.
And what came out was invisible.
