I Tried Going Lighter Without Becoming an Ultralight Backpacker // This summer, I decided I wanted to try carrying less weight in my pack, but I wasn’t ready to become an ultralight backpacker. For the last five years, I’ve been using a 1-person freestanding tent that’s easy to set up and comfortable to sleep in, but it’s also heavier and bulkier than I’d like it to be. So when Gossamer Gear released The Free, a lightweight, double-walled, freestanding tent earlier this year, I was really excited to check it out. Instead of testing The Free for one night and then calling it a review. I decided to bring it out with me all summer long on multiple backpacking trips in Montana, the Sawtooth Mountains in Idaho, the Enchantments in Washington and along a 30-mile section hike on the Pacific Crest Trail.
