Who invented letters? And how did people communicate before writing existed?
Thousands of years ago, humans found a way to preserve information beyond memory. The earliest writing systems developed in the ancient world, with some of the earliest known written records appearing in Mesopotamia around 3200 BCE. Early clay tablets were often used to record goods, quantities, and transactions.
But writing and the alphabet are not the same thing. Alphabetic writing emerged later, probably in the early second millennium BCE, through a historical process connected with West Semitic-speaking peoples and Egyptian writing. The Phoenician alphabet later influenced the Greek alphabet, which became one of the ancestors of the Latin alphabet used to write English today.
There was no single known inventor of all the letters we use today. The alphabet developed over generations, as people adapted signs to represent the sounds of their languages.
Discover the fascinating history of writing — from marks pressed into clay to the letters we type on our screens.
