In 1881, twenty-five men of the U.S. Army landed at Lady Franklin Bay, far north in the Canadian Arctic, to run a weather station for the first International Polar Year. They set a farthest-north record — then waited for relief ships that never arrived. By the time rescuers reached them in June 1884, only seven were alive, and one more died soon after. The Greely expedition, officially the Lady Franklin Bay Expedition, was part of the first International Polar Year. The Greely expedition reached a new farthest north in 1882, then spent three winters in the Arctic when two relief ships failed. This true survival story follows the Greely expedition from Fort Conger to Camp Clay at Cape Sabine. It is a true survival story about broken promises, hunger and the six men who came home from the Greely expedition. Evidence that some of the dead were used for food was never fully explained; Greely denied any knowledge of it. Every true survival story on Survival Story Hour is told from real sources.
