From the beginning, the Guinean virtuoso’s career has been a matter of pioneering riffs, experimenting with distortions, Wah Wah pedals, and incorporating jazz influences. In short, he has modernized the music that he grew up with and it has inspired a whole new generation of kora players. But it isn’t just his instrument that impresses in this 2018 concert at the Moods Club in Zurich. Kouyate’s voice is equally significant to the sound. With it, he combines the smoothness and tone of his forbearers (Kouyate’s father, Ḿ’Bady, toured with Miriam Makeba and Harry Belafonte), with enough personality to set him apart – when you hear Sekou, you know what you are listening to within the first few notes. The kora leads the charge over rhythm section that propels an elegant mix of jazz-funk and West African Mandinka traditions. It is a sound informed by so many influences – blues, soul and rock amongst them – so much so that it requires genuine, elastic versatility. Fear not: Sekou is joined by a stellar cast, notably including the brilliant Francis Kweku Osei behind the kit, and he attacks his kora, proving its endless possibilities … no wonder he has become known as the Jimi Hendrix of the instrument.
