Today we’re listening to and analyzing Metallica’s “One,” one of the band’s darkest and most powerful examples of musical storytelling. Released on ...And Justice for All in 1988, “One” tells the horrifying story of a soldier who survives a devastating battlefield injury only to find himself trapped inside his own body—unable to see, hear, speak, or move, while remaining conscious. The song mirrors that nightmare musically. What begins with battlefield sounds, clean guitar textures, and an almost haunting sense of stillness gradually becomes heavier, faster, and increasingly relentless, culminating in the famous machine-gun-like guitar and double-bass-drum section. As two classical musicians, we were fascinated by the song’s large-scale construction: its use of contrast, recurring material, changing textures, rhythmic intensity, guitar writing, and the way Metallica allows the musical structure itself to become part of the narrative. This isn’t heaviness simply for the sake of heaviness—the music seems to pull us deeper into the character’s psychological and physical nightmare as the song progresses.
