Python OOP Inheritance | Employee and Developer Example
In this video, we learn one of the most important Object-Oriented Programming concepts in Python: Inheritance.
Instead of learning inheritance only through theory, we will build a simple real-world example using Employee and Developer classes.
We will create a base Employee class containing common employee information and then create a Developer child class that inherits from Employee and adds developer-specific information.
This practical example will help you understand how parent classes and child classes work together and how inheritance allows us to reuse existing functionality.
WHAT YOU WILL BUILD
A base Employee class containing:
Employee ID
Employee Name
Salary
Department
display_details() method
Then we will create a Developer class that inherits from Employee and adds:
Programming Language
Experience
The Developer class will be able to access functionality from the Employee parent class.
KEY CONCEPTS COVERED
Object-Oriented Programming
Classes
Objects
Parent class
Child class
Inheritance
Constructor
Instance variables
Instance methods
Method inheritance
Code reusability
Object creation
Working with multiple objects
PARENT CLASS
Employee
The Employee class represents common information that can apply to different types of employees.
Employee attributes:
Employee ID
Name
Salary
Department
Employee method:
display_details()
This method displays the common employee information.
CHILD CLASS
Developer
Developer inherits from Employee.
In addition to the employee information, a Developer has additional attributes:
Programming Language
Experience
This demonstrates how a child class can extend the functionality of a parent class.
INHERITANCE FLOW
Employee
↓
Developer
The Developer class automatically gets access to the functionality defined in Employee.
This allows us to avoid duplicating common employee logic.
OBJECT CREATION
We will create at least three objects and demonstrate how they work.
For example:
Employee object
Developer object
Developer object
We will call the inherited methods as well as developer-specific functionality.
REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE
Consider an organization with different types of employees.
An employee may have:
Employee ID
Name
Salary
Department
A developer has all of those properties, but also has:
Programming Language
Years of Experience
Instead of creating completely separate and duplicate classes, inheritance allows us to reuse the common Employee functionality and extend it for Developer.
WHY INHERITANCE IS USEFUL
Without inheritance, we may have to repeat the same employee-related code in multiple classes.
With inheritance:
Common functionality → Parent Class
Specialized functionality → Child Class
This improves:
Code reuse
Maintainability
Readability
Extensibility
Organization of the application
CONCEPTUAL STRUCTURE
Employee
Common employee information
↓
Developer
Employee information + developer-specific information
This is one of the fundamental ideas behind Object-Oriented Programming.
WHAT YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND AFTER THIS VIDEO
By the end of this project, you should be able to explain:
What is a class?
What is an object?
What is a parent class?
What is a child class?
What is inheritance?
How does a child class access parent functionality?
Why is inheritance useful?
How can inheritance reduce code duplication?
