Mikey Madison chose to portray Frances Haugen in The Social Reckoning without meeting the real-life Facebook whistleblower during filming, allowing herself to interpret the character through Aaron Sorkin’s screenplay before reaching out to Haugen afterward. The Oscar-winning actress, 27, stars in Sorkin’s new film, which follows Haugen’s journey from Facebook employee to whistleblower. Madison told PEOPLE that although the story closely follows real events, the movie is not a documentary. “The character I play, Frances, is based off of Frances Haugen,” Madison explained. “Obviously, it follows [Haugen’s] story and all of the events very closely.” Madison said she immediately wanted to join the project after reading Sorkin’s script, describing the story as incredibly important. Following her acclaimed performance in Anora, she met with the writer-director and expressed her interest in taking on the role.
