Italy’s government is drawing a hard line after violent protests in Milan. The demonstrations began over soaring energy prices, high rents, low wages and weak public services. But masked protesters allegedly looted shops, attacked police and set property on fire. Giorgia Meloni’s proposed five-point plan includes 500 additional soldiers in Milan, a new offence for violent participation in demonstrations and fines of up to €20,000. Protesters could be held financially responsible for damage. If minors are involved, their parents could receive the bill. Teenagers over 14 would be presumed capable of understanding their actions, while dangerous 14-to-17-year-olds could face detention. Italy says protest is a right. Violence is not.
