Making shea butter the traditional way produces about 65–70% organic waste — shells, pulp, and tens of thousands of gallons of waste-laden water. At many facilities, that wastewater simply runs off and leaves a brown stain across the local landscape. And the process itself needs firewood for roasting and heating. So we asked a different question: what if the waste could become the fuel? This film walks through the Baraka waste-to-energy process, from collecting the wastewater left after whipping shea butter, to solar evaporation pits, to fuel blocks burned in purpose-built combustion chambers that power our eco-efficient roasters — and every other heating step in production. It didn't come from a lab. It came from collaboration: the women who know these materials and processes intimately brought the ideas, our field team contributed the engineering, and our customers kept asking the hard questions about sustainability. It took time and many attempts. The results: reduced deforestation and a 90% cut in the carbon impact of shea processing. New employment. And a fuel the women actually prefer — it burns with far less smoke, making it healthier to work with every day.
