What REALLY Happened to Simon Baker After The Mentalist?

*Simon Baker was one of television's biggest stars as Patrick Jane in *The Mentalist*. But when the hit series ended in 2015, his career took a different direction—and many fans began wondering what had happened to the actor they knew so well.* Born in Tasmania, Australia, in 1969, Baker developed a lifelong passion for surfing before becoming an actor. After working his way through Australian television and Hollywood films such as L.A. Confidential and *The Devil Wears Prada*, he landed the role that would define a major chapter of his career. For seven seasons, Baker captivated audiences with his performance in *The Mentalist*. The role brought international recognition, award nominations, devoted fans, and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But behind the success was a demanding production schedule. After years of long filming days, Baker began exploring a different balance between his acting career, personal life, and connection to Australia. When The Mentalist ended in 2015, he didn't immediately pursue another long-running American television series. Instead, he turned toward projects that offered new creative challenges. One of his most important moves came with *Breath*, the 2017 Australian film he directed based on Tim Winton's novel. The story's surfing culture and coastal setting connected closely with Baker's own upbringing and love of the ocean. He continued working in film, appearing in projects such as *High Ground*, *Blaze*, and *Limbo*. Rather than disappearing completely, he was exploring a more selective approach to acting and filmmaking. His personal life also changed during this period. Baker and Rebecca Rigg, his partner of nearly three decades, separated in 2020, adding another significant transition to his life. Then, in 2024, Baker returned to international attention through Netflix's Australian series *Boy Swallows Universe*, reminding audiences that his talent extended far beyond Patrick Jane. So, what really happened to Simon Baker after *The Mentalist*? He didn't simply vanish from Hollywood. He explored directing, continued acting, returned to Australian productions, and pursued opportunities outside the relentless schedule of a major network television series. His journey offers a different perspective on success. Sometimes, the goal isn't to become more famous or take on a bigger role. It's to choose meaningful work, reconnect with personal interests, and decide how you want to spend your time.
