Losing weight after 70 can look like progress on the scale while hiding a very different change inside the body. A bathroom scale tells you how much total weight you lost — but not whether that weight came from fat, muscle, water, bone, or a mixture. And in later life, losing the wrong tissue can matter far more than simply reaching a smaller number. In this video, we look at why intentional weight loss can include lean-tissue loss, what determines whether muscle is preserved, why muscle mass is not the same as strength or power, how resistance exercise changes the composition of weight loss, and why excess fat and low muscle can exist at the same time. We also cover an important distinction: planned fat loss and unexplained weight loss are not the same thing. Unintentional weight loss in older adults can sometimes be an important medical signal and should not automatically be celebrated. The goal after 70 is not simply to make the number on the scale as small as possible. The better question is what the weight is made of — and whether strength, muscle, and everyday capability are being preserved. This video is for educational purposes only and does not replace individualized medical advice.
