JAPAN'S ISLANDS in CHAMPI's GRIP! 93 MPH Record GUST, Ishigaki Left DARK (Latest Updates)
Typhoon Champi battered Japan's far southern islands on Thursday and Friday, October 22 and 23. Japan's weather agency recorded October wind records, including a gust of about 93 miles per hour on its far western island. Close to 15,000 homes lost power across the Sakishima islands by Friday night, 11,070 homes on Ishigaki were still dark on Saturday afternoon, and Okinawa asked the army for help. This video follows the sea, the wind, the outages and the clean up.
In this video, we look at Typhoon Champi on Japan's southern islands: the October wind records, the surf over the Ishigaki breakwater, the power cuts that left half of the city dark, the rain on Miyako, the flights and ferries that stopped, the army's first help with water, how the storm weakened near Kyushu and how to stay safe near the sea.
