Exploring the Titanic Railroad in Douglas State Forest
As a prelude to an overnight bikepacking trip with the Appalachian Mountain Club in Massachusetts' Douglas State Park I did a little exploring of the Grand Trunk Railroad. This interesting railroad was built and nearly completed before the project was abandoned. The line was planned to operate from Palmer. MA to Providence, RI. Why is it sometimes referred to as the Titanic Railroad? The chief architect and promoter of the railroad was Charles Melvile Hays. Mr. Hays was in England raising money for his railroad. As fate would have it for his return trip, he booked passage on the maiden voyage of the HMS TITANIC. Some say when the Titanic sank so did the Grand Trunk Railroad’s dreams of reaching Providence, RI.
There are a great deal of old railroad rights of way here in Douglas State Park. On this trip we explore the Grand Trunk Railroad from the summit on the West end near Mount Daniels and the crossing of the New Haven Railroad’s midland division to the east.
Outdoors With John
Hi I’m John and I enjoy being outdoors. I am passionate about Hiking, Biking (road cycling and mountain biking), Backpacking, Bikepacking, Snowshoeing, and visiting our National Parks. I enjoy the natural and historical aspects of the outdoors and often share that on my videos. I also enjoy putting together videos that capture my adventures. I’m not an expert, and I try not to offer too much advice. If you’re like me, I suspect you’ll find value in most of these adventures.
