Jōmon pottery (縄文土器) represents some of the oldest known ceramic traditions in human history, dating from approximately 14,500 BCE to 300 BCE in prehistoric Japan. The word Jōmon translates directly to "cord-marked," referencing the distinct patterns left behind by pressing twisted ropes into damp clay before firing. Pit firing is the oldest known method of hardening pottery, dating back roughly 30,000 years. Instead of a modern electric or gas kiln, unglazed pots are nestled inside a dug earth pit or modified metal drum, layered with organic fuels and minerals, and burned to impart smoky, unpredictable, and artistic surface patterns.
