"I'm Not Sayin'" is a song written by Gordon Lightfoot. It was recorded in December 1964 and released as a single A-side in 1965 and on his 1966 debut album Lightfoot! The lyrics detail the singer's promise: not that he can necessarily love the subject, or be true to the subject, but only that he can try to do so. The single peaked at number 12 in Canada in the June of 1965. Cash Box described it as "a rhythmic, folkish ode about a guy who refuses to make any romantic promises to his girlfriend." In late May 1965, Nico recorded a version released on Immediate Records. The single had limited success. This version of the song features Jimmy Page, then a studio musician, on the 12-string guitar. Nico's version was produced by Page as well, and this promo film was shot at West India Docks in London by Peter Whitehead. The film had no audio so we here at The Square Disc have created an enhanced stereo version which had been over-dubbed to the best possible quality, the film has also been upscaled. Nico was born Christa Päffgen on 16 October 1938 in Cologne to Wilhelm and Margarete "Grete" Päffgen. Nico passed away on the 18th of July 1988 at just 49 years old. Nico had roles in films including Federico Fellini's La Dolce Vita (1960) and Andy Warhol's Chelsea Girls (1966). At the insistence of Warhol, she sang lead on three songs of the Velvet Underground's debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico (1967). At the same time, she released her debut album, Chelsea Girl (1967), composed of songs written by other musicians. At the suggestion of her friend Jim Morrison, she started writing her own material, using a harmonium, not traditionally a rock instrument. John Cale of the Velvet Underground became her musical arranger and produced The Marble Index (1968), Desertshore (1970), The End... (1974) and other albums. This is a fabulous film that up to now has not had Nico's song attached to it, I hope you'll all enjoy it as much as I do. Thanks for popping by. Eddy/EVB #nico #westindiadock
