Bolivia has zero coastline today, while Chile controls over 4,300 km of the Pacific — here's the war, treaty, and desert that sealed it forever. This video traces how Chile ended up with more than 4,300 kilometers of Pacific coastline while landlocked Bolivia has none. Until 1879, Bolivia controlled the Litoral, a nearly 400-kilometer coastal strip with the port of Cobija and the booming nitrate city of Antofagasta. A tax dispute over nitrate mining triggered the War of the Pacific (also called the Saltpeter War), pitting Chile against Bolivia and Peru. Key battles at Iquique, the ironclad Huascar, and Angamos decided the war. The 1904 Treaty of Peace and Friendship made Bolivia's loss permanent, leaving La Paz dependent on the Arica railway and the Andes' Mount Illimani looming over the Atacama Desert crossing. In this video you'll learn: • Why does Chile have over 4,300 km of coastline while Bolivia has none? • What was Bolivia's Litoral and why did it matter? • How did the War of the Pacific (Saltpeter War) start? • Why did nitrate make the Atacama Desert worth fighting over? • What happened at the Battle of Iquique and the Battle of Angamos? • What did the 1904 Treaty of Peace and Friendship actually give Bolivia? • Why does Bolivia still depend on the port of Arica today? • How do the Andes and the Atacama block Bolivia from the sea? Bolivia's loss of its Pacific coast is one of South America's defining geopolitical shifts — a case study in how physical geography, resource wealth, and war reshape borders. The Andes and the Atacama Desert, among the driest places on Earth, turned a treaty line into a near-permanent barrier. For anyone studying the geography of Bolivia and Chile, border disputes, or landlocked countries, this history explains why access to the ocean is still a live political issue in the region today. ⏱ Chapters 0:00 Why Bolivia Lost Its Pacific Coastline 0:36 Chile's Narrow Coastline and the Andes Mountains 1:41 The Altiplano Plateau and the Bolivian Border 2:06 The Litoral Coast and the Cobija Port 2:54 Atacama Desert Nitrates and Rich Silver Deposits 3:39 The Saltpeter War and the Mejillones Nitrates 4:41 Battle of Iquique and Captain Arturo Prat 5:54 The 1904 Treaty of Peace and Friendship 6:12 Free Transit Rights and the Arica Railway 7:28 Mount Illimani and the Dry Atacama Desert 8:23 Descending from the Altiplano to Sea Level 9:15 The Bolivian Navy on Lake Titicaca Waters 10:11 The 2013 International Court of Justice Case 10:42 Puerto Busch and the Paraguay River Route 11:26 Bolivia's Permanent Landlocked Geographic and Natural Barrie Key places & terms: Chile · Bolivia · Pacific Ocean · Atacama Desert · Andes · Altiplano · Litoral · Cobija · Antofagasta · Iquique · Huascar · Arturo Prat · Angamos · Arica · Tacna · 1904 Treaty of Peace and Friendship · Arica-La Paz railway · Mount Illimani · War of the Pacific New animated-map explainers on geography and geopolitics — subscribe so you never miss the next map. #geography #maps #geopolitics #Bolivia #Chile Imagery: NASA Blue Marble (public domain) · Relief: SRTM/NASADEM (AWS Terrain Tiles) · Map data: Natural Earth Photo credits (Wikimedia Commons, file titles searchable there): • Tren, Plaza Ferrocarriles, Puerto Montt - A74056 — Rjcastillo (CC BY 4.0) • AndesEarlyAMArgentinoLake — Calyponte (CC BY 3.0) • Colors of Altiplano Boliviano 4340m Bolivia Luca — Luca Galuzzi (Lucag) (CC BY-SA 2.5) • Paisaje cerca de Calama, Chile, 2016-02-01, DD 8 — Diego Delso (CC BY-SA 4.0) • Humberstone — rewbs.soal (CC BY-SA 2.0) • AricaViewCoast — Heretiq (CC BY-SA 2.5) • Pisagua, nov 2017 77 — Juan Villalobos (CC BY-SA 4.0) • Vista de Iquique, Chile, 2016-02-11, DD 20 — Diego Delso (CC BY-SA 4.0) • Línea del Tren Visviri — Promeroy (CC BY-SA 4.0) • Jiangmen Nanyang Ship 180m General Cargo Ship — Samson Ng .
