Why are Japanese people confused by you? One small word, daijoubu, can show you why. Learn Japanese and understand Japan travel better.
You know every word. But the person in Japan still looks confused. Why?
Often, the words are only part of the message. In this video, I use one easy word, daijoubu, to show you what I mean.
Depending on the moment, daijoubu can mean "I'm okay," "Are you okay?", "Is this okay?", or "No thanks." Same word. Different message.
This is not a vocabulary lesson. It is about how people understand each other in Japan. Context matters. Context means what is happening around the words: the place, the tone of voice, and the person you are talking to. Like when you say "I'm good" in English. It can mean "No thanks," or "I feel fine." The situation tells you which one.
If you are learning the Japanese language, or you plan a trip to Japan, this will help you listen in a new way. It is easy Japanese, with real Japanese conversation and real culture.
In this video:
Why direct translation can confuse you
What "reading the room" means in Japan
How tone changes the message
Why "hai" does not always mean yes
Four questions to ask when you feel lost
I'm Japanese, and Japanese people misunderstand each other too. So you don't need to be perfect. You just need to notice more.

Question for you: have you ever known every word in Japanese, but still had no idea what the person meant? Tell me in the comments.
