Why do small farmers matter to the future of food? In the first episode of The Global Acre, Tendai Chitapi sits down with Lehlogonolo "Lolo" Maesela of Sakata Seeds to explore the realities facing farmers and what it actually takes to build a successful agricultural enterprise. Lolo works closely with small and pre-commercial farmers across South Africa. In this conversation, he shares what those farmers have taught him about resilience, discipline, markets, genetics, collaboration and the responsibility that comes with growing food. We explore why small farmers play such an important role in resilient local food systems; why choosing the right seed begins with understanding your market and growing environment; why quality matters as much as yield; and why successful farming requires much more than good inputs. We also look beyond the individual farm to ask a bigger question: what becomes possible when farmers stop operating in isolation and start working together? From sharing transport and input costs to aggregating production and negotiating with buyers, Lolo argues that collaboration could unlock opportunities that individual small farmers struggle to access alone. And ultimately, this is a conversation about something bigger than agriculture. It is about food security, responsibility, community and the people who make our food systems possible. In this episode: Why agriculture is much broader than "spades and dirt" The realities facing South African farmers Why small farmers matter to food security Why seed genetics matter Matching genetics to markets and growing conditions What separates successful farmers from struggling farmers Why farmer collaboration matters The opportunities small farmers may be missing Building better agricultural support systems What working with farmers teaches us about people Why the next generation gives Lolo hope Episode highlights (time-stamped): 00:00 Your seed is your first insurance 00:49 Welcome to The Global Acre 02:00 How agriculture found Lolo 04:36 Working alongside small farmers 07:21 The realities facing farmers today 12:00 Why small farmers matter 17:16 Small farmers and resilient food systems 21:16 Why Sakata works with small farmers 23:44 Why genetics matter 27:48 Choosing the right seed 31:55 What separates successful farmers? 37:51 Why farmers need to work together 41:27 The opportunity in organic farming 44:39 Why small farmers underestimate themselves 48:33 Building farmer hubs and stronger markets 53:11 What needs to change in the farming ecosystem? 54:50 Sakata's role beyond seed 56:24 What farmers teach us about people 57:26 Lessons from the field: Faith 58:35 What gives Lolo hope? 1:00:02 Every harvest begins with a decision About The Global Acre The Global Acre is a Kuronga podcast exploring the people, knowledge, relationships and systems shaping the future of African agriculture.
