Hidden along the shoreline of Sydney’s Homebush Bay is a remarkable ship graveyard — rusting wrecks left behind from the bay’s industrial past, slowly being reclaimed by mangroves and wetlands.
The most extraordinary survivor is SS Ayrfield. Launched in Scotland in 1911 as the steam collier SS Corrimal, she carried cargo along the Australian coast, served during the Second World War and later returned to the Newcastle–Sydney coal trade.
More than a century after she was launched, Ayrfield remains abandoned in Homebush Bay, her rusting steel hull now supporting a dense growth of mangroves.
But Ayrfield is only part of the story.
In this episode of James Carlton Explores, we explore Sydney’s hidden Homebush Bay ship graveyard and uncover the history scattered along its shoreline — from an unidentified wreck concealed in the mangroves to the remains of HMAS Karangi, SS Mortlake Bank and the tug Heroic.
We also explore the bay’s industrial past, the shipbreaking yard established here during the 1960s, the remains of its old shipbreaking ramp, and the extraordinary environmental recovery that has transformed this once heavily industrial shoreline.
It is a place where more than a century of Sydney history now exists side by side — ships, industry, pollution, abandonment, mangroves and wetlands. And at the centre of it all sits Ayrfield: part shipwreck, part habitat, and one of the strangest survivors of Sydney’s industrial past.
