We are showcasing the "Okotsunai Coastline" in Shimamaki Village. This stretch of coast lies between Shiraito Cape and Gasuto Island. It is a rugged landscape defined by sheer cliffs and a series of bizarre, striking rock formations. Notable features along this coastline include "Okotsunai Akaiwa" (Red Rock), "Okotsunai," "Joroko-iwa" (Courtesan Rock), and "Shiraito no Tachi-iwa" (Shiraito Standing Rock). Particularly eye-catching is the site of a massive rockfall that occurred in 1997. You can see the wire mesh—which likely once protected the cliff face—torn apart in a devastating manner; the scene at the time must have been truly unimaginable. Regarding this massive rockfall: On August 25, 1997, a large-scale rock collapse occurred near the southern entrance of the No. 2 Shiraito Tunnel on National Route 229 in the Okotsunai area of ​​Shimamaki Village. Collapse Overview: Date/Time: First collapse occurred around 2:30 PM on August 25, 1997; a second collapse followed on August 28. Location: Okotsunai, Shimamaki Village, Hokkaido (National Route 229, southern entrance of No. 2 Shiraito Tunnel). Scale: Approximately 20,000 cubic meters of rock collapsed, destroying about 100 meters of the tunnel structure. Casualties: Fortunately, there were no victims. A rockfall of approximately 20,000 cubic meters represents an unimaginable volume of material.
