Japan Changed Volleyball. But There's One Problem.

Japan volleyball has become one of the most fascinating stories in men's volleyball. But if Japan is now capable of beating Italy, the USA, Canada and Olympic champions France, why does the team keep falling short when the biggest matches are on the line? In this video, we break down Japan's volleyball system, the tactical revolution behind their success, and the one problem that could be stopping Japan from winning the biggest international volleyball tournaments. Japan went 12–0 in the 2026 VNL preliminary round, beating elite teams and surviving six five-set matches. Their comeback against Olympic champions France showed just how effective Japan's defense, transition offense and rally management have become. But Japan's current success didn't appear overnight. We look at how Japan volleyball evolved from being an undersized team into one of the world's most difficult teams to play against, using speed, defense, transition attacks and a highly connected offensive system. We also break down the roles of Yuki Ishikawa, Yuji Nishida and Ran Takahashi, and why each player allows Japan to compensate for its lack of physical size against some of the world's biggest teams.
