What the Cheyenne Said Came Down Inside Bear Butte — Documented in 1923

What did the Cheyenne say came down inside Bear Butte, and why has nobody ever examined the four arrows they say were handed over there? On July 29, 1857, about three hundred Cheyenne warriors waited in a line on the Solomon River for the United States Army, having been told by two holy men that bullets could not touch them. The army drew sabers instead. This episode follows the protection they carried back to its source: a lone volcanic hill on the northern edge of the Black Hills, the man the Cheyenne say went into it, the four stone tipped arrows he brought out, the day in 1830 when a sick Pawnee man pulled them off a lance, the hundred horses paid to get one back, and the archaeology of meteorites that Native peoples across North America buried like relatives. Then the question nobody has put in print: what are the arrows made of, and who has the standing to ask. We also walk through Crow v.
