Why Is the Great Salt Lake Disappearing?

Why is the Great Salt Lake shrinking—and what happens when one of the American West’s largest lakes keeps retreating? Utah’s Great Salt Lake sits in a closed basin: rivers bring water in, but no river carries it to the ocean. Follow the Bear, Weber, and Jordan Rivers from the mountains to the lake, discover how ancient Lake Bonneville shaped the landscape, and see how drought, heat, and upstream water use affect the lake today. We’ll also explore the exposed lakebed, migratory birds, brine shrimp, and the railroad causeway. The lake naturally rises and falls. One wet season can lift the shoreline, but lasting recovery depends on the water balance across the entire watershed.
