Uber has been ordered to pay $40 MILLION in a case involving an Uber driver and the tragic death of a 23-year-old passenger — but this case raises a much bigger question about Uber driver training, passenger safety, and Uber’s independent contractor business model. In this video, I examine why Uber provides drivers with “guidance” but very little formal training, even though rideshare drivers routinely deal with difficult passengers, medical transportation, intoxicated riders, unsafe drop-off situations, route changes, and other situations that can quickly become serious. Could providing more extensive Uber driver training create problems for Uber’s independent contractor model? And after a $40 million arbitration award, could cases like this force Uber to rethink how it trains, vets, and manages rideshare drivers? We also discuss the larger issue facing Uber and Lyft: drivers are expected to safely transport millions of passengers while often being left to make difficult decisions on their own. This case should be a warning to every rideshare driver. Whatever happens during a difficult trip, passenger safety — and your own safety — has to come first. Watch the full video and let me know what you think: Should Uber provide mandatory safety training for drivers? Would better training make rideshare safer, or would it create new questions about whether Uber drivers are truly independent contractors?
