Take the mammals off this planet and something else is already waiting. There are more reptile species alive today than mammal species — and one fossil bone from a Colombian coal mine is how we know how hot the Earth has to get before they take over again. In a steel drawer in Gainesville, Florida, sits a single vertebra from the middle of a snake. It is wider than your hand. It belonged to Titanoboa cerrejonensis — 12.8 metres long, around 1,135 kilograms — and it came out of the overburden of the largest open-pit coal mine in Latin America. This is not a film about a big snake. It is about what a body that size proves about the temperature of the world that grew it, and about who inherits a planet that goes back to that temperature. Because the last time it did, the reptiles got enormous — and the horses shrank to the size of a house cat. WHAT THIS DOCUMENTARY COVERS · Why a snake's body size works as a thermometer for a 58-million-year-old climate, and why two teams of scientists still disagree about what it reads (Head and colleagues, 2009: 30–34 °C · Denny, Lockwood and Somero, 2009: 27–29 °C) · The Palaeocene–Eocene Thermal Maximum: 5–8 °C of warming in 10,000 to 20,000 years · Sifrhippus, the first horse, shrinking about 30% — from 5.6 kg to 3.9 kg — as the world heated, then rebounding to 7 kg as it cooled · Alligator relatives and giant tortoises living at 78° North on Ellesmere Island, through four months a year with no sun at all · The arithmetic of being cold-blooded: why an ectotherm runs on a tenth to a fifth of the energy an endotherm of the same mass needs · Wet-bulb 35 °C — the temperature at which a healthy human cannot cool down, in shade, at rest, with unlimited water — and why direct human trials put the real limit lower, near 30–31 °C · Why that threshold has already been crossed at real weather stations at least a dozen times since 1979, around the Persian Gulf and the Indus valley · Lizards already vanishing: 4% of local populations gone since 1975, with 39% of local populations and around 20% of lizard species projected lost by 2080 — not from lethal heat, but from losing the hours in which they can safely feed · Green turtles from northern Great Barrier Reef beaches running 99.1% female among juveniles and 99.8% among subadults · Pangaea Ultima in roughly 250 million years: sustained land temperatures above 40 °C, and only 8–25% of that supercontinent habitable for mammals, against around 66% of land today · And the answer the film has been walking toward the whole time: the reptiles never actually left.
