A Full Year Growing Carrots | Seedbed to Winter Harvest at Gilfresh Produce

Gilfresh takes the carrot crop from ploughed ground through seedbed preparation, drilling, summer lifting, winter protection and harvest just before Christmas. The first pass breaks down the ploughing with an ALPEGO CAYMAN before the Patterson ridgers pull up the beds. Single-bed Patterson Bed tillers and the Laggan RF1400 straddle bed tiller work the soil, followed by ScanStone destoners removing stones and clods from the seedbed. After one final pass with the Jones Engineering bed former creates a fine seed bed for the Agricola Italiana precision drill sows three rows of carrots into each bed. During summer, the crop is topped and lifted with a Jones trailed harvester working alongside the Dewulf RA3060. Carrots remaining for winter require another complete operation. Straw is baled and spread over the beds using a Jones Engineering straw layer and KUHN PRIMOR, protecting the crop from frost until it is needed. Before the winter harvest, the straw is brushed from the beds and a Jones straw remover clears the remaining material ahead of the Dewulf. A tracked dumper carries the carrots to the headland, where aluminum mats protect the ground while the trailers are loaded.
