Her name was Sayyida al-Hurra — and history spent four centuries trying to lose her. Born into exile after the fall of al-Andalus, raised in a mountain town built by refugees, she rose to rule the fortified Moroccan city of Tetouan in her own name — not behind a husband, not behind a son. She rebuilt it as a war-port, allied with the corsair lords of Algiers, and turned the western Mediterranean into a hunting ground for Spanish and Portuguese shipping. Kings who considered her a criminal were forced to negotiate with her as a sovereign. In 1541 the Sultan of Morocco married her — and travelled to HER city to do it. Then, in 1542, after twenty-seven years of rule, she lost everything in a matter of days. Not to a fleet. Not to an empire. To someone inside her own household.
