God Hath Not Given Us the Spirit of Fear | Breaking Fear, Patterns & Cycles

Fear can become so familiar that we begin to accept it as normal. In this episode of Salt & Light Corner, recorded on March 18, 2026, I talk about fear, inherited behaviors, family patterns, anxiety, spiritual ignorance, and the cycles that can continue from one generation to the next. We often talk about inherited blessings and generational consequences, but families can also pass down learned behaviors, thought patterns, coping mechanisms, fears, and ways of responding to life. Sometimes we repeat what we have seen without realizing it. I also share from my own experience of not growing up in the church and not always understanding church language, biblical terminology, or spiritual principles. There are things we may do out of ignorance, anxiety, fear, or lack of understanding that can affect the way we live and the choices we make. But God has not called us to live governed by fear. 2 Timothy 1:7 (KJV) says: “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” I also look at the life of Job. Scripture describes Job as a man who was upright, feared God, and turned away from evil. He was deeply concerned about his children and regularly offered sacrifices concerning them. Later, during his suffering, Job said: “For the thing which I greatly feared is come upon me, and that which I was afraid of is come unto me.” — Job 3:25 (KJV) Job’s fear did not cause what happened to him, but his words show that even a righteous person can wrestle with deep fear. Fear may have been modeled for us. Anxiety may have been familiar. Unhealthy patterns may have existed in our families for generations. But familiar does not mean permanent. Scripture teaches us that we can be transformed by the renewing of our minds, take our thoughts captive, resist the enemy, and choose a different path. Ezekiel 18:20 also reminds us that while behaviors, consequences, and patterns can affect families across generations, each person is accountable before God for his or her own sin. Just because something runs in your family does not mean it has to continue through you. God has not given us the spirit of fear. He has given us power, love, and a sound mind.
