The ritual begins by lighting a candle and presenting a cup of wine. The flame acts as a signal toward the unseen, while the offering of wine draws upon the ceremonial gestures of offering, remembrance, and reception found in ancestral rites.
The work incorporates Enochian—a ritual language associated with the late-sixteenth-century practices of John Dee and Edward Kelley—alongside an invented vocal language inspired by its sounds and structure. Rather than treating these words simply as carriers of semantic meaning, EL VABELIA approaches them as materials of breath, voice, repetition, and invocation.
Accompanied by the resonance of the jeongju, “ZOL-OH LIRGA, MIA-DR KAI-OX VABEL” and “Zodacare e / Ca OD ZODAMERANU” are uttered almost as breath. Repeated in cycles of 3, 7, and 9, the words gradually move away from semantic meaning and become breath, rhythm, and vibration. Here, repetition functions as a compositional and ritual structure rather than as an attempt to prove the literal presence of a supernatural being.
“KAI–OX–VA–BEL–ZOL–OH” becomes the final fragmented invocation. With the last strike of the jeongju, the ritual closes. The sound marks a symbolic release of what has been called forth—a gesture of sending away—and returns the listener’s attention from the invisible realm to the body.
