After Operation Sindoor: Akash Missile Goes Global |
India’s indigenous Akash Missile System is gaining international attention after securing exports to Tajikistan and Turkmenistan. Following its reported operational performance during Operation Sindoor, could this Indian Missile System become India’s next major defence export success and challenge established global suppliers? In this Defence News report, Inconnect News examines how India is expanding its strategic footprint in Central Asia. Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh confirmed the exports, following Armenia’s emergence as the first foreign customer for the Akash Missile Defence System in 2022. He described the programme as a success story demonstrating the maturity of India’s indigenous missile design and production capabilities.
Developed by the DRDO and manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Limited and Bharat Electronics Limited, the Akash Missile Defence System is a short-range surface-to-air air defence system capable of engaging multiple aerial targets simultaneously at ranges of up to 25 kilometres. The newer Akash-NG variant is designed to extend that range to approximately 50 kilometres, strengthening India’s military technology and indigenous defence capabilities.
The growing demand comes as Central Asian countries seek alternatives to Russian military suppliers. India’s cost-effective defence equipment could create opportunities for further missile, radar and artillery exports. The reported performance of the system during the 2025 India Pakistan War has also brought renewed attention to India’s air defence capabilities. During the India Pakistan Conflict, indigenous military technology remained an important part of India’s defence preparedness.
For the Indian Army and Indian Air Force, domestic defence manufacturing remains central to modernisation and self-reliance. Meanwhile, the BrahMos Missile has emerged as another major export success, strengthening India’s position in international defence markets. India’s defence exports reportedly increased by 62 per cent to $4.1 billion in the last financial year, with the government targeting ₹50,000 crore within two years.
