Seven years ago today, Lover came out. And Claudia told us something before we started that changed the whole reaction — she said listen to Red before you get to Daylight, or you'll miss it. She was right, and we'll get to that. Lover was the first album Taylor made after leaving Big Machine. The first one she actually owned. She'd just come off the Reputation Stadium Tour, the fight over her back catalogue was in every headline, and instead of coming back angry she came back in pastels and butterflies. Eighteen tracks. She never got to tour it — Lover Fest was supposed to happen and then the world shut down. So this is the album everybody learned by heart in their houses. We went in with the deluxe Version 4 book, the one with her real diary pages in it. Almost none of it is about Lover. It's her at fourteen writing about a talent show, at fifteen writing about a record deal. But the very last entry is January 2017, and she writes about how a year ago she was in LA getting ready for the Grammys and now she's in London hiding out, trying to protect something from a world that wants to wreck it. That's this whole album, three years before it existed. And then there's Daylight. Back in 2012, in the liner notes of Red, she wrote that real love shines golden and doesn't burn itself out — and that maybe she'd write a whole album about that kind of love if she ever found it. Daylight is the last song on that album. She made a promise to herself at twenty-two and kept it at twenty-nine. Alanna and I laughed, cried, and loved our way through this one. You Need To Calm Down had us both grinning like idiots. And then Soon You'll Get Better destroyed us. We had to sit there a minute after that one before either of us could say anything. What we kept coming back to is that this album is about choosing somebody on an ordinary Tuesday. Not the crash, not the fire — the staying. Five years together, one year married. Lover is older than our marriage, which is a strange thing to realize halfway through an album. We're still right at the start of the thing she spent eighteen songs describing.
