The Trap: How a U.S. Air Force Pilot's Heroics Overcame a North Vietnamese Ambush

This video is about awe-inspiring acts of courage, bravery, and daring during the Vietnam war that took place on October 6, 1969 in Laos in a small hamlet called muang phin. Quite by accident in late 2023 I visited the obscure battlefield where this all took place, in Muang Phin, near deadly Xepon, and that’s when I began researching what happened there. In 1969, Just 10 days after president Nixon uttered his first denial that no U.S. combat troops were in Laos – a denial Nixon was to make four times - Major Phil Conran, a U.S. Air Force CH-3 pilot with the 21st U.S. Air Force Special Operations Squadron out of Nakon Phanom or NKP Thailand, and his men in a CIA orchestrated operation were trapped on the ground under heavy hostile fire desperately fighting for their lives having landed straight into a North Vietnamese position. American witnesses and after action reports attest that Conran’s “heroic command and control actions” saved the lives of 8 U.S. Air Force crewmen and 46 Lao soldiers. Conran’s efforts kept the Vietnamese from overrunning the position until the group was rescued shortly before nightfall.
