You are counting tins of corned grox in a supply dugout when the shelling stops. Something green leans in through the door. You are holding a clipboard in one hand and a pencil in the other. So you put both hands up.
Your name is Wil Cotter, supply clerk, Ninth Varrow Rifles. In the Imperial Guard surrender is a crime, and Orks don't understand it at all. So the Bad Moons Nob in the doorway does the only thing that makes sense to him: he laughs, and he keeps you. This is twenty years as the bookkeeper of an Ork warband, paid in teeth: the scrap pens, the fighting pits, a Painboy's bolt in your knee, the worst wedding in the history of the galaxy, a Warboss who learns to write his own name, and the second list you keep at the back of the book. Then the Imperium comes back for you.
A long, quiet story for painting miniatures, a long drive, or falling asleep. A what-if built on the setting's own rules, not a canon event, so argue with it in the comments.
