Hello friends, George here! Welcome to my channel.
In this video, I'm showing you the latest update on my 3D renderer, originally developed for the Commodore Plus/4 and later ported to C using the Oscar64 cross-compiler.
And now, the big news: the renderer is running on the Commodore 64!
The C64 version can translate, rotate, and scale 3D models and supports the Painter's Algorithm for drawing visible faces from back to front. I also tested models with up to around 1,000 vertices.
The renderer is still a work in progress, with plenty of optimization and a few bugs left to fix. I also had to deal with some differences between the Plus/4 and C64, especially regarding memory, graphics, and keyboard handling.
In this video, I demonstrate several models, including my TIE fighter (Star Wars), compare rendering speeds, and take a quick look at some of the C64-specific code.
The current version does not yet include double buffering, text mode, or some of the other features from the Plus/4 version, mainly because of memory limitations.
I've uploaded the source code and some example 3D models to GitHub, so if you're interested in C64 programming, 6502 development, or retro 3D graphics, you can check it out and experiment with it yourself.
It's still a work in progress, but I'm very happy with how far this project has come.
