Most founders build a business around themselves. The real challenge is building one that can survive without them.
In this episode of the Durban Small Business Podcast, Luke Holden has a conversation with Dinesh Chetty, founder of DPF Home Loan Negotiators, to explore how a small finance business started in 2004 grew into a national operation that has helped more than 60,000 South Africans on their journey to homeownership.
We explore the discipline behind more than two decades in business, why Dinesh believes your biggest competitor should be yourself, and how losing some of his passion forced him to reconnect with the reason he started in the first place.
This conversation goes deep into team building. he explains why trust and transparency matter more than almost anything else when bringing people into a small business, how he transitioned from being the person closing deals to coaching others, and why the right people become “plug-ins” to the future of the company.

Who is Dinesh Chetty?
Dinesh Chetty is the founder of DPF Home Loan Negotiators, formerly Durban Property Finance, a business he started in 2004 after helping his own family navigate the process of securing their first home loan.
Beginning from a small office with no established team, Dinesh spent more than two decades building a mortgage origination business centred on personalised service, relationships and understanding the story behind every application.
By 2019, the business had helped approximately 25,000 people on their homeownership journey. Since then, DPF has grown rapidly, surpassing 60,000 homeowners and expanding from a Durban-based operation into a national network of home loan negotiators.
A major focus of Dinesh’s leadership today is building a team capable of carrying the values, service and legacy of DPF into its next chapter.
