Shamash Rabû: Ancient Akkadian Hymn to the Sun God of Justice

This is a reverent hymn in the Akkadian language, invoking Šamaš (Shamash), the ancient Mesopotamian god of the sun, justice, truth, and law. As the all-seeing solar deity who illuminated the world and human deeds, Shamash was the divine judge and guarantor of oaths. This text describes him as the "great judge" who establishes justice (mīšaru), before whom humanity stands in awe, looking to the heavens. Such hymns were central to temple rituals in Babylon and Assyria, serving to honor the deity and invoke his protective, illuminating power over the land and its people. It represents a profound intersection of spirituality, cosmic order, and early legal philosophy. 🎶 Original Text & Translation: Original Cuneiform (Transliterated Akkadian): “šamaš rabû, nēber ṣēri, mīšaru iškunu pānīka, awīlum ana kīma šamê naṣbat šēpīka.” Phonetic Transcription: Sha-mash ra-bu, nay-ber tseh-ri, mee-sha-ru ish-ku-nu pa-ni-ka, a-wi-lum a-na kee-ma sha-me na-as-bat she-pi-ka.
