A Character Illustration made will ink pens and coloured and finished in Procreate & Photoshop Lately I’ve found myself reaching more often for real pens and ink rather than diving straight into my iPad or Mac. There’s something wonderfully grounding about raw materials. Don’t get me wrong, I still adore the colouring and finishing stages on digital tools. Together they feel like a healthy cocktail of modern and retro. You really can’t beat working with raw materials. No matter how slick the software gets, it still doesn’t replicate the magic of scratching a nib across a sheet of heavy cartridge paper, ink smudging under your fingertips, leaving behind happy accidents that no “undo” button could ever improve on. It’s not about one being better than the other, more that both have their own particular charms. Digital gives me control, polish and the occasional ability to delete my mistakes with a smug grin. Traditional gives me texture, unpredictability and the reminder that art can sometimes stain your favourite jumper. Together they keep things lively and stop me from getting too precious about the process.
